About Our SIP Calculator

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) has become one of the most popular ways to invest in mutual funds — especially in India, where salaried investors use SIPs to build wealth gradually over the years. The idea is simple: instead of trying to time the market with a large lump sum, you invest a fixed amount every month and let compounding do the heavy lifting over 10, 15, or 20+ years.

The math of SIP returns is not intuitive. A ₹5,000/month SIP at 12% annual returns for 20 years does not just double or triple your money — it grows into over ₹50 lakh, thanks to compound interest. Our SIP calculator helps you see exactly how that growth works, year by year, with a clear visual breakdown of invested capital vs wealth gained.

How to Use the SIP Calculator

Getting your SIP projection takes just a few seconds:

  1. Choose your currency — INR (₹), USD ($), EUR (€), or GBP (£).
  2. Enter your monthly investment amount — the fixed SIP you plan to invest every month.
  3. Enter the expected annual return — 10–15% is a common assumption for equity mutual funds in India. This is not guaranteed; it is a planning figure.
  4. Enter the duration — you can use years + months, months only, or years only. Longer durations dramatically increase the impact of compounding.
  5. Optionally enable Step-Up SIP — if you want to increase your monthly SIP every year (e.g. by 10%), the calculator will account for that.
  6. See your result instantly — maturity value, total invested, wealth gained, and a full year-wise growth table appear at once.

Why Use Our SIP Calculator

Many SIP calculators exist online, but ours offers several practical advantages:

  • Step-Up SIP support. Most calculators assume a constant monthly amount. Ours handles the realistic case where your SIP grows every year — critical for accurate long-term projections.
  • Flexible tenure input. Enter duration as years + months, months only, or years only — depending on what is convenient.
  • Detailed year-wise breakdown. See exactly how much you invest and how much your money grows in each year. This is invaluable for understanding how compounding works over time.
  • Visual invested vs returns bar. A clear visual showing how much of your final amount is your own money vs returns generated by the market.
  • Multi-currency. Works equally well with INR, USD, EUR, and GBP — useful for NRIs or international investors.
  • Privacy first. All calculations happen in your browser. Your financial details never leave your device.

How SIP Returns Are Calculated

The SIP maturity formula uses compound interest with monthly compounding:

M = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i] × (1 + i)

Where M is the maturity value, P is the monthly investment, i is the monthly rate of return (annual rate divided by 12 and then by 100), and n is the total number of monthly installments.

The formula assumes each month's investment grows for the remaining months until the end of the SIP term. The earliest investments compound the longest — which is why starting early and staying invested is so powerful.

For Step-Up SIPs, our calculator simulates month by month: each year, the monthly SIP amount increases by the step-up percentage, and each new contribution grows until maturity. This produces an accurate result even when the SIP amount changes over time.

The Power of Compounding

To see why SIPs are so effective, consider two investors with ₹5,000/month at 12% returns:

  • 10-year SIP: Total invested = ₹6,00,000. Maturity ≈ ₹11.6 lakh. Wealth gained ≈ ₹5.6 lakh.
  • 20-year SIP: Total invested = ₹12,00,000. Maturity ≈ ₹50 lakh. Wealth gained ≈ ₹38 lakh.
  • 30-year SIP: Total invested = ₹18,00,000. Maturity ≈ ₹1.76 crore. Wealth gained ≈ ₹1.58 crore.

Notice how doubling the duration from 10 to 20 years more than quadruples the wealth gained. And going from 20 to 30 years nearly triples it again — even though the extra invested amount is smaller. This is the essence of compound interest: time is the most powerful variable, not the amount.

What Is Step-Up SIP?

A Step-Up SIP (also called Top-Up SIP) is a feature that automatically increases your monthly investment by a fixed percentage every year. For example:

  • Year 1: ₹5,000/month
  • Year 2: ₹5,500/month (10% step-up)
  • Year 3: ₹6,050/month
  • Year 4: ₹6,655/month — and so on

This is especially useful because salaries typically increase every year. As your income grows, you can invest more without feeling the pinch. Over 20–30 years, the difference between a regular SIP and a 10% step-up SIP can be enormous — often 2x or more in final corpus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a SIP?

SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) is a way to invest a fixed amount in mutual funds at regular intervals — usually monthly. Instead of investing a large lump sum at once, you invest smaller amounts regularly, which averages out market volatility through a strategy called rupee cost averaging. SIPs are popular in India and other countries because they make investing accessible to salaried individuals.

How is SIP maturity calculated?

SIP maturity is calculated using the compound interest formula: M = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly investment amount, i is the monthly rate of return (annual return divided by 12 and then by 100), and n is the total number of monthly installments. Our calculator uses this formula and also simulates each month to produce accurate results even with step-up SIPs.

What is Step-Up SIP?

Step-Up SIP (also called Top-Up SIP) lets you increase your monthly SIP amount by a fixed percentage every year. For example, if you start with ₹5,000/month and set a 10% annual step-up, then year 2 your SIP becomes ₹5,500/month, year 3 ₹6,050/month, and so on. This helps grow your corpus much faster as your income increases over time.

What return rate should I assume?

For equity mutual funds in India, a 10–15% annual return is a reasonable long-term assumption, though returns are not guaranteed. Debt funds typically return 6–8%, and hybrid funds fall in between. Always remember that mutual fund returns are subject to market risk. Our calculator defaults to 12% as a common planning figure — but do not treat it as a promise.

Is SIP better than lump sum investment?

SIP and lump sum each have advantages. SIP works better for salaried individuals who do not have a large amount to invest at once, and it reduces the risk of investing at a market peak. Lump sum can outperform in rising markets but carries higher timing risk. SIP also enforces discipline — you invest automatically without trying to time the market.

Can I stop my SIP anytime?

Yes. Unlike fixed deposits, SIPs are flexible. You can pause, modify, or stop a SIP anytime without penalty. Your existing units remain invested and continue to grow. However, stopping a SIP early may reduce the benefit of compounding, especially if the SIP duration was short.

Are SIP returns guaranteed?

No. SIP returns are not guaranteed. They depend entirely on the performance of the underlying mutual fund, which is tied to the market. Historical returns do not guarantee future results. Our SIP calculator is a planning tool to help you estimate possible outcomes — not a promise of returns.

Is my financial data stored or shared?

No. All SIP calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your investment amount, expected return, and duration are never sent to a server, logged, or shared. This is completely private — even if you disconnect from the internet, the calculator continues to work.
